Memorial Day Decorations
The Trustees of the John C. Shirley Cemetery recognize Memorial Day as a special time of remembrance for families, veterans, and our community.
Preparations for Memorial Day weekend are currently underway, with cemetery cleanup and the first lawn mowing of the season expected to be completed by Thursday, weather permitting. Due to significant spring rainfall and concern over winter stress and snow mold in some areas, mowing and early lawn treatments were intentionally delayed this spring to allow the grass to establish healthier growth before seasonal maintenance programs began.
Families visiting the cemetery for Memorial Day may place temporary decorations to include fresh flowers or one potted plant at the gravestone. For safety and maintenance purposes, we kindly ask that only non-glass containers be used. Items should be retrieved in a timely fashion after the holiday weekend concludes .
Following Memorial Day, the next phase of seasonal lawn restoration and grounds improvement will begin, including soil supplement applications, overseeding, and fertilization. We appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation as this work continues throughout the cemetery. Current cemetery bylaws and decoration regulations remain in effect during this ongoing restoration process.
The Trustees would also like to thank the Town Historian for updating the veterans’ flags throughout the cemetery in preparation for Memorial Day.
We appreciate the continued support of our community as we work to preserve and improve the cemetery for all families and visitors.
Sincerely,
John C. Shirley Cemetery Trustees
